Lifeline Melbourne - Volunteers Responding to a Higher Call Volume Than Ever
Lifeline volunteers are responding to a higher call volume than ever before. It’s a challenging and heartbreaking job that requires resilience.
The organisation recently opened its first crisis call centre in Melbourne’s west, at Victoria University (VU) St Albans campus. It has experienced a 35% surge in demand since COVID-19 began.
Support available 24 hours a day
Lifeline Melbourne is a charity that provides free crisis support and suicide prevention services across Australia. Their volunteers provide emotional assistance over the telephone and online. They can also help people in financial need, providing information on food, utility bills and housing, as well as connections to community resources.
The first Lifeline crisis call centre in Western Melbourne opened on Victoria University's St Albans campus in 2023. It trains and supports VU students to become volunteer crisis supporters and provides real-world placement opportunities for students studying psychology, counselling, youth work and social work.
Other Lifeline services include MensLine Australia, which is a free telephone and online service for Australian men who need someone to talk with. Kids Helpline is a free phone and online counselling service for young Australians aged 5 to 25. 13YARN is a free telephone and online service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who need a confidential one-on-one yarn with a trained crisis supporter.
Text Crisis Support
Whether it’s via phone, online chat or text message, people who use Lifeline are not alone. Volunteer Crisis Supporters across the country provide one-to-one conversations for help-seekers who are experiencing emotional distress and may be contemplating suicide or self-harm.
All conversations with Lifeline are confidential and free. The national 13 11 14 telephone crisis support service is backed up by the national Online Crisis Support Chat service and the nationally operated SMS service.
The Lifeline SMS service was launched in 2021 and provides another option for helpseekers to access support. This addition was made possible by the generous funding of the Commonwealth Government.
Help-seekers who used either the phone or online chat modalities were asked to indicate their expectations of Lifeline, including immediate outcomes (such as feeling less upset) and longer-term strategies such as learning how to cope. Suiciderelated contacts tended to expect more immediate outcomes, while non-suiciderelated contacts had more positive expectations of Lifeline.
Call Crisis Support
If you are having a crisis, call Lifeline on 13 11 14, Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636 or Suicide Call Back Service on 1300 659 467. These are free services that provide phone and online counselling.
You can also try Pain Link, a free service for people living with unrelieved pain. Carer Gateway can help you with information and support if you are an unpaid carer of someone who has a disability, chronic illness or mental health condition. Call 1800
263 265. MensLine Australia provides phone counselling and online resources for Australian men. Call 1300 78 99 78 or chat online. Kids Helpline is a free, confidential phone and online counselling service for children and young people aged 5 to 25. Call 1800 55 1800 or chat online.
The VU Lifeline Western Melbourne call centre is Victoria’s first Lifeline crisis call centre to operate from a university campus. It has 14 volunteer Crisis Supporters and provides real-world placement opportunities for VU students studying psychology, community work, counselling and youth work courses.
Online Support
Lifeline offers crisis support via telephone, text and online chat. This service is free and confidential. The national service is available by calling 13 11 14. Local Lifeline centres offer specific services that are relevant to the community.
Participants were recruited through convenience sampling using Lifeline’s website and social media pages. Participants were asked about their reasons for contacting Lifeline, their expectations of the service and whether or not these had been met. Suicide-related help-seekers endorsed a greater number of reasons for contact than non-suicide related contacts.
MensLine Australia is a free telephone and online counselling service for Australian men. You can call 1300 78 99 78 or chat online. Changing for Good is a free telephone and online counselling service that helps Australians to maintain respectful relationships without violence. You can call 1800 233 333 or chat online.

What Does an NDIS Provider Do? yogability.com.au
The NDIS is a government-funded scheme that provides Australians with disabilities access to high-quality support services. Registered NDIS providers can provide a variety of support options, including core and capital supports.
However, choosing an ndis provider Sydney can be a challenging task. It is important to choose a provider who will understand your needs and assist you in creating a plan.
The NDIS is a government-funded scheme
The NDIS is a government-funded scheme that provides people with disabilities with funding to purchase high-quality support services. This funding is provided directly to participants through a plan, which they use to identify their goals and purchase the supports they need. Depending on their disability, they may need assistance with daily living activities, accommodation and community participation.
The financial backbone of the NDIS is a combination of government contributions at both the federal and state/territory levels. The Commonwealth shoulders the majority of this funding, while the states and territories contribute funds to ensure the NDIS is implemented effectively at a local level.
The NDIS has recently introduced new measures to ensure the quality of the supports it delivers. These measures are intended to protect the wellbeing of participants and prevent providers from charging them unnecessarily. They also aim to ensure that participants receive quality service provision, promote safety and provide opportunities for self-advocacy. These measures include an independent NDIS Commission, which will work to promote quality and safeguards for participants.
It is not means-tested
The ethos of the NDIS is founded on equity and inclusion, recognizing that disability should not be a barrier to living an empowered life. This approach extends to financial neutrality, ensuring that participants’ income and assets are not a factor in accessing disability support. This allows people to focus on achieving their goals and empowering them to live a more fulfilling and independent life.
NDIS participants are encouraged to use their funding towards a wide range of services and supports, from everyday activities to home modification and community participation. However, the scheme is not meant to replace existing social security payments like the Disability Support Pension. Therefore, it is important to consult a tax professional to ensure that your NDIS funding is being used appropriately.
You can also seek help from a disability support provider or an NDIS planner to assist you with your application. They can help you understand your NDIS options and ensure that your application is as robust as possible.
It is flexible
The NDIS is a flexible scheme that allows participants to choose their own providers and services. This flexibility empowers people to explore diverse support options and tailor their care to suit their needs, goals, and aspirations. They can also use their personal networks to find suitable providers, as long as they are registered with the NDIS.
NDIS plans are more flexible than ever before, thanks to changes in 2020. The NDIS has moved more line items into core funding, allowing greater flexibility and choice. You can check out your plan on the myplace portal to see which supports are booked and to compare providers.
Choosing the right disability service providers Sydney provider is essential for ensuring that you are receiving high-quality disability services. You should check out a provider’s customer testimonials, google reviews, and the quality of their service. Also, be sure to check the NDIS price guide to ensure they are charging fair prices. Lastly, you should check whether the provider has a complaints process and multilingual support.
It is personalised
Personalised NDIS services ensure that participants receive the right assistance at the right time. This is essential for meeting their needs and achieving long-term goals. It also allows flexibility in how support services are delivered, adapting to the nuances of their lives.
To get personalised NDIS services, start by applying for the scheme. Once you are approved, you can begin selecting registered providers to deliver your plan. Use tools like the NDIS provider finder and consult Local Area Coordinators to help you make your choices. Choose providers who are experienced and offer world-class disability care.
NDIS providers can offer a range of disability supports, including assistance with daily living tasks, community participation, and specialised care. They can also provide physiotherapy, speech therapy, and other disability equipment. They may even offer holiday programs, sports programs, and social activities for people with disabilities. These programs can boost your confidence and give you the skills you need to live a happy life.

Finding the Right Provider for Supported Independent Living in Victoria
Navigating the world of Supported Independent Living Victoria can be daunting, especially for individuals with disabilities seeking to maintain their independence while receiving the necessary support. If you’re in Victoria and looking for a provider, follow these essential steps to ensure you find a suitable match that meets your needs.
1. Research Local Providers
The first step in your journey is to conduct thorough research on registered NDIS service providers in your area. Use the NDIS website to search for providers who specialize in Supported Independent Living services. This will give you a solid starting point to identify potential providers who can offer the necessary support.
2. Check Credentials
Once you have a list of potential providers, verify their credentials. Ensure that the provider is registered with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and possesses the necessary qualifications to deliver quality care. For example, Pulse4Life is a registered NDIS service provider based in Victoria, managed by a team of registered nurses with the expertise to support clients effectively.
3. Evaluate Services Offered
A reputable provider should offer a range of services tailored to meet diverse needs. Assess the services provided to ensure they align with your requirements. For instance, Pulse4Life provides various support options, including:
Domestic Care and Household Tasks: Assistance with everyday chores to help maintain a comfortable living environment.
24-Hour High-Intensity Nursing and Personal Care in Victoria: Comprehensive medical and personal support available around the clock.
Group and Centre Activities: Opportunities for social engagement and community participation.
Assistance with Travel and Transport: Support for individuals needing help getting to appointments or social events.
Behaviour Support: Specialized assistance for those requiring additional behavioral support.
4. Read Reviews and Testimonials
Feedback from current or past clients can offer valuable insights into the quality of care and support provided by a service. Look for reviews and testimonials on the provider’s website and third-party platforms. These accounts can help you gauge the experiences of others and inform your decision.
5. Contact Providers
Once you’ve narrowed down your options, reach out to potential providers to discuss your specific needs. Prepare a list of questions regarding their services, staff qualifications, care philosophy, and any other concerns you may have. This conversation will help you determine if the provider is a good fit for you or your loved one.
6. Visit Facilities
If possible, visit the facilities of the providers you are considering. This step is crucial as it allows you to see the environment and meet the staff in person. Pay attention to the cleanliness of the facilities, the friendliness of the staff, and the overall atmosphere. This experience can significantly influence your choice.
Why Choose Pulse4Life?
Among the providers in Victoria, Pulse4Life stands out as a trusted option committed to high-quality, client-centered care. Their focus on empowering clients to live independently sets them apart. Promoting Inclusivity in Disability Support Services
Disability support services are essential to enable people with impairments to lead happy, meaningful lives. However, real fulfilment involves promoting participation in the larger community rather than merely helping others.Â
Disability support services in Melbourne can fill the gap in the following ways:
Community Access: Picture yourself wanting to go to the movies or get coffee with friends, but you're having trouble because of sensory problems or limited mobility. Support for community access aids in closing this gap. Professionals with the necessary training can help with transportation, navigating public areas, and making sure that interactions in communal settings go smoothly.
Social and Cultural Programmes: Participation in social and cultural events shouldn't be restricted due to a disability. Support services might plan inclusive events, such as movie evenings, art classes, or museum excursions. These initiatives give participants the chance to socialise, which promotes a feeling of connection and belonging.
Supported Independent Living: Independent living environments are ideal for many people with impairments. Support services can help with everyday chores, including cleaning, cooking, and money management. This enables people to keep their independence while getting the help they require.Â
Community Nursing: Everyone needs access to high-quality healthcare. Community nursing services offer medical treatment that is specifically customised to meet the needs of people with disabilities while they are at home. This guarantees that individuals stay comfortable in their own homes while receiving the required medical care.
Social Clubs: Social clubs are a great way to meet people. Support services can assist in starting new social groups or connecting people with existing ones that serve a variety of interests. These groups offer an environment where people may interact socially, form friendships, and take part in enjoyable activities.
Through the integration of these components, disability care in Melbourne can transcend the role of mere assistance. They have the power to encourage inclusivity and create an environment where all people, regardless of ability, can prosper and actively engage in life.
